1. General

What is The Varus March?
A three-day, 100-kilometre trek from Porta Westfalica to Kalkriese. We follow, ​as closely as modern terrain allows, the route on which the XVII, XVIII and XIX legions vanished in 9 AD.

When does it happen?
Arrival & briefing 7 September
March 8 – 11 September
Departure 12 September


2. Registration

How do I apply?
Email a short introduction and your reason for joining to [email protected]. We will reply with the full briefing and next steps.

Is there a fee?
Yes. The fee covers the two indoor nights (7 and 11 September) and basic organisational costs.


3. Physical Preparation

How fit must I be?
You should comfortably walk 30 km in a day while carrying 25–30 kg, then do it again the next morning and then again the morning after.

However please note that it is up to you to decide the weight you want to carry, this challenge is fully voluntary,


4. Gear & Weight

Why carry 30 kg?
It reflects a loaded legionary pack and ensures every marcher remains self-sufficient for the full three days. However as said above, it is up to you to decide how heavy you want carry.

What kind of shelter is required?
Any reliable one-person setup: bivy sack, tarp system or compact tent. During the march, nights are outdoors.

Food and water?
Bring compact, high-calorie food for three full days and bring enough storage to water for three days.


5. During the March

How fast do we travel?
A steady 5–6 km per hour, with only short pauses. Daily distance is roughly 30–35 km.

Are there support vehicles or baggage transfer?
No. The march is entirely self-contained.

What if I cannot continue?
You may withdraw at any time, but you must arrange your own transport from the trail to the nearest town. In a genuine medical emergency the group will contact local rescue services (112).


6. Safety

Is medical staff present?
No. A group first-aid kit will be handled out to each participant. Each participant must manage routine injuries and self-care.


7. Travel Logistics

Nearest airports?
Hannover (HAJ) and Dortmund (DTM). From either airport, regional trains reach Porta Westfalica in 1–1.5 hours.

Return travel after the finish?
Bus or taxi to Osnabrück Hbf, then train back to Hannover or Dortmund airports for flights home.


8. Language & Community

Is English accepted?
Yes. Briefings are given in Italian and English.

May I walk with friends?
Yes but together in the group.


9. Weather

What conditions should I expect?
Early September in northern Germany is mild (10–22 °C) but can turn wet. Pack for rain, wind and cool nights.


10. After the March

Is there a certificate or token?
Those who complete the route receive a small engraved keepsake and diploma.

Will there be future editions?
Yes. The Varus March is intended as an annual event and alumni are welcome to return.
